Overview:
Sonny Styles is cut from the mold of the old-school thumping safety. Styles has been an enforcer for the Ohio State Buckeyes and is now heading into his true junior season for the team. Ohio State will look to dethrone Michigan as the BIG10's boogeyman and make a push for the CFP and they will need Styles to do so.Â
Styles saw his best season as a sophomore in 2023 where he posted 53 total tackles, two sacks and one pass defensed. Â
Styles has some great traits and with a strong 2024 campaign could end up being one of the best pickups in the 2025 NFL Draft.Â
Strengths:Â
Deceptively quick with a low center of gravity that allows him to cut on a dime.Â
Long arms and big frame that allows him to play in the box with extreme effectiveness.
Super elite athlete, will test well at the combine.
Elite run defender showing the instincts to shoot gaps and drop ball carriers.
Textbook tackler with power at the point of attack.
Shows good feet and eyes in zone coverage playing passing lanes and utilizing his length.Â
Can play safety or bulk up to play linebacker at the NFL level due to large frame.Â
Weaknesses:Â
Very raw due to lack of football experience.Â
Struggles in man coverage due to tight hips and lack of technique.Â
Change of direction is limited, he will struggle playing as a single high safety.Â
Despite strength and quickness he struggles to disengage from blocks limiting his effectiveness in the box.Â
May become a niche player having to be a sub-package linebacker or safety at the NFL level.
